Child's ShoesUnion County’s Child Welfare Section is committed to achieving safety, permanence, and well-being for children at risk for abuse, neglect, and dependency.

Based upon received and accepted reports, staff work one-on-one with families to assess, coordinate and provide services that address the safety, risk, family strengths and needs, and well-being of children.


Duty to Report

In accordance with North Carolina General Statute 7B-301 (a):

"Any person or institution who has cause to suspect that any juvenile is abused, neglected, or dependent, as defined by G.S. 7B-101, or has died as the result of maltreatment, shall report the case of that juvenile to the director of the department of social services in the county where the juvenile resides or is found."

How to report suspected child abuse, neglect and or dependency
  • Reports cans be made 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to any Division of Social Services agency.
  • Reports may be made in person, by phone or by mail.
    • Calls make take 30 to 45 minutes to report.

Defining Child Abuse, Neglect and Dependency

Child abuse is when a parent or caretaker intentionally causes serious physical injury, emotional harm, and even death to a child.

Examples:

  • Sex abuse
  • Physical injury
  • Emotional abuse
  • Moral turpitude
  • Cruel and grossly inappropriate behavior modification
  • Human trafficking
    • Sex trafficking
    • Labor trafficking
