Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis.  The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but can attack any part of the body.

TB is spread through the air from one person to another. TB bacteria are passed through the air when a person with TB disease coughs, speaks, laughs, sings or sneezes. Anyone near a person with TB disease can breathe the bacteria into their lungs and become infected.
