Union County recognizes and appreciates the use of social media by members of our online community to express ideas, thoughts, opinions, messages, and other content. Each social media account operated by Union County is a moderated online discussion site and not a public forum. Comments are regularly monitored by administrators and, while comments will not be edited by county employees, a comment may be reported and/or deleted if it violates the county's social media policy. Comments should be related to the post topic.
Communications on Union County social media platforms are considered public records under North Carolina General Statutes Section 132 and will be managed as such.
The county reserves the right to moderate content on its social media accounts to keep content in accordance with all applicable laws and community guidelines outlined by specific social media platforms. The county reserves the right to hide, delete or report comments/postings. Comments/posts that may be hidden, deleted or reported include, but are not limited to, those that contain the following:
- Any content or comments that do not pertain to items within the jurisdictional control or authority of Union County.
- Vulgar, abusive or threatening language, defamatory statements or sexually explicit pictures, comments, or attachments.
- Personal attacks, hate speech or offensive terminology that promote, foster, or perpetuate discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, age, religion, sex, marital status, genetics, status with regard to public assistance, national origin, disability, or any other legally recognized protected basis under federal, state, or local laws, regulations or ordinances.
- Suggestions or encouragement of illegal activity.
- Unsolicited business proposals or endorsements/promotion of commercial services, products or entities.
- Infringements on copyrights, trademarks or other intellectual property.
- Spam and links to unrelated sites.
- Duplicate posts by the same author (the original post will be left intact assuming it does not otherwise violate this policy)
- Confidential or non-public information, including but not limited to any personally identifiable medical information and any content that may violate the legal rights of the owner of said content.
"Personal attacks” as used in the comment/content standards is defined as an insult directed at a particular person, and not directed at substantives ideas, procedures, or issues at hand.
Repeated violations of the comment/content standards may result in a public user’s comments/postings being banned from Union County social media sites.
