Full-time employees are eligible for coverage under Union County’s group health insurance plan. Employees may obtain coverage for an eligible spouse and/or dependents for an additional charge. Union County offers two health plan options. A Direct Primary Care option and a Traditional option. Coverage for eligible employees begins the first day of the first full month following the date of hire.

Dental: Full-time employees are eligible for coverage under Union County’s group dental insurance plan and may obtain coverage for an eligible spouse and/or dependents for an additional charge. Dependents covered on Union County’s group health plan are eligible for dental coverage.

Vision: An allowance is given per person on an annual basis to use toward vision appointments. Voluntary vision coverage through Community Eye Care is also available.

Union County provides all full-time and benefited part-time employees with Basic Term Life insurance coverage at no cost in the amount of 1X the employee’s base annual salary.

Employees may elect to enroll in supplemental life insurance for themselves, their spouse and/or dependent life insurance and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance.

As a public employee in North Carolina, you have two supplemental retirement savings plans available to you through the Department of State Treasurer – NC 401(k) and NC 457.

NC 401(k) – Union County contributes an amount equal to 5% of full-time and benefited part-time employees’ gross salary into an individual 401(k) account established for the employee. The 5% contribution is given in addition to the employees’ earnings. Employees may start, change or stop contributions on a pre-tax or after-tax basis at any time however are not required.

NC 457 – Provides an additional avenue for County employees to save for retirement. Employees may contribute by payroll deduction to the plan on a pre-tax or after-tax basis up to the allowable IRS Amounts. Plan members will enjoy qualified penalty-free withdrawals, easy investing solutions, statements to keep you informed and retirement planning tools.

Full-time County employees and benefited part-time employees are automatically enrolled in the North Carolina Local Government Employee’s or Local Law Enforcement Officers Retirement System on their date of hire. The mandatory tax-deferred contribution of 6% is deducted from the employee’s pay each pay period. After five years the employee will be vested in those funds for the purpose of retirement benefits.
