280x200-BurnSmartBurnSafePrevent injury and damage to property by burning safely and following state laws. It’s important to always stay with the fire, keep burn piles/barrels at least 25 feet from any structure and do not use gasoline, kerosene or diesel fuel to ignite the fire.

Union County residents who wish to burn natural vegetation must follow these regulations:
Do NOT burn the following:
  • Trash, paper or cardboard
  • Wires, plastic or synthetic materials
  • Household chemicals or paint
  • Tires or other rubber materials
  • Building materials, lumber or wood scraps
  • Asphalt shingles
  • Heavy oils
How to report illegal burning

The Union County Fire Marshal’s Office investigates burning complaints and sends findings to the state. The NC Department of Air Quality determines penalties. Penalties start at $25,000. To initiate a complaint or report, call 704-283-3528.
