Burn Smart. Burn Safe.
Prevent injury and damage to property by burning safely and following state laws. It’s important to always stay with the fire, keep burn piles/barrels at least 25 feet from any structure and do not use gasoline, kerosene or diesel fuel to ignite the fire.
Did you know it’s illegal in North Carolina to burn anything that doesn’t grow? Find information and resources below to follow all applicable regulations and avoid state penalties that start at $25,000.
Union County residents who wish to burn natural vegetation must follow these regulations:
- Get a free burn permit from the North Carolina Forest Service
- Check current conditions in the state’s air quality portal to verify air quality for the day. Do not burn when the color of Union County is red, orange, or purple.
- If you live within municipal limits, review regulations specific to your address. Click here to find your municipality.
- Stay with the fire.
Do NOT burn the following:
- Trash, paper or cardboard
- Wires, plastic or synthetic materials
- Household chemicals or paint
- Tires or other rubber materials
- Building materials, lumber or wood scraps
- Asphalt shingles
- Heavy oils
How to report illegal burning
The Union County Fire Marshal’s Office investigates burning complaints and sends findings to the state. The NC Department of Air Quality determines penalties. Penalties start at $25,000. To initiate a complaint or report, call 704-283-3528.
