Purpose of Public Meeting and Hearing: The purpose of the public hearing, as well as part of the public meeting, is to discuss the proposed landfill expansion at the existing Union County Construction & Demolition (“C&D”) landfill. Interested persons may submit oral comments regarding the proposed C&D landfill expansion during the public hearing at the public meeting. The site plan describing the proposed changes is available for public inspection at the Union County Public Library (Monroe Library) located at 316 East Windsor St., Monroe, NC 28112, which is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Union County C&D Landfill is located at 2125 Austin Chaney Road, Wingate, NC, north of the intersection of Olive Branch Road (SR-1006) and Austin Chaney Road (SR-1758), approximately 1.3 miles east of Highway 200, between the communities of Wingate and Monroe in Union County. The site currently has an active C&D landfill, an existing and operating Municipal Solid Waste transfer station, and a convenience center. The C&D landfill expansion is anticipated to cover less than 31 acres on the Union County C&D landfill site, adjacent to the current C&D landfill. The final elevation of the C&D landfill expansion will be 680 feet above mean sea level and the landfill expansion will accept only construction and demolition debris. The engineering estimate of waste to be placed in the proposed landfill expansion is approximately 3,100,000 Cubic Yards. The existing facility entrance off of Austin Chaney road will remain unchanged as the entrance for the C&D landfill once expanded.
Public notice of the proposed expansion is being made pursuant to NC Code Regs. § 15A NCAC 13B .0536
