Sun Valley Student Raising Money to Protect Sheriff’s Office K-9s

Posted on 02/27/15

February 27, Monroe, NC - Kierston Moore, a senior at Sun Valley High School, is raising money to buy bullet proof vests for Union County Sheriff’s Office K-9s.

Currently, the Sheriff’s Office has nine K-9s that are specifically trained to search for drugs and explosives, search for lost people, look for crime scene evidence and protect their handlers.

Kierston became interested in helping the Sheriff’s Office buy K-9 vests after hearing about a police K-9 that died in Asheville.

“I also have a dog that was sired by a police dog named Gunner,” Kierston said.

“K-9 vests costs between $800 and $1,200,” said Deputy William Walden, who serves with a K- 9 named Sammy. “The vests would be most useful when the dogs are searching for people in buildings. That is when the dogs most likely could get shot or stabbed.”

If you would like to help Kierston raise money for K-9 vests, send donations to P.O. Box 1650, Indian Trail, N.C. 28079.
